Gov. Obiano Kick-Starts Anambra Airport Construction

ANAMBRA: The governor of Anambra state, Chief Willie Maduaborochukwu Obiano (Akpokuedike Global)has performed the land breaking of the construction of the Anambra International Airport City project at Umueri in Anambra East Council Area of the state.

Gov. Obiano on Tuesday performed the formal flag off of the project at Ivite-Umueri before a capacity crowd of citizens, local folks, government officials, traditional rulers, party chieftains and other stakeholders.

The project, is a dream come true as was envisioned by the governor Obiano’s administration to put Anambra state on the world map as a first choice business destination and commercial cum economic,industrial hub in sub Saharan Africa.

The N2 billion dollars worth project was the product of a partnership between the Anambra Government, Orient Petroleum Resources Ltd and a Chinese Consortium, Sinoking Investment Ltd.

It was designed to operate through the system of Build, Operate, Manage and Transfer (BOMT) by China Aviation Planning and Designing Institute with the full compliments of a standard airport city. It would have two runways, aircraft maintenance facility, aviation fuel dump, hotel, conference center, shopping mall, industrial park amongst others.

Inaugurating construction of the project, Gov Obiano said when completed, the Airport City will create activities that will transform the state’s economic landscape and position Anambra state as a major commercial and industrial hub in the SouthEast, the country and the West Africa subregion.

He restated his administration’s projection to utilize the project as a springboard to boundless business opportunities for the Anambra business community’s import and export businesses. The project has a projected capacity to create 1200 direct and 3,600 indirect jobs, 75 percent of which will be reserved for Ndi Anambra.
Gov Obiano revealed that his administration has issued a directive to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University and the Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe to immediately commence teaching of Mandarin(Chinese language)to train personnel that will function effectively in the upcoming Chinese village in the state.

He appealed to Ndi Anambra everywhere to bring their wealth home and invest in the State, assuring them that there is no limit to the opportunities that abound in the state.

The Chairman of ANSIPPA and traditional ruler of Umuoji, HRH Igwe Cyril Enweze said the project was a dream come true not only for Ndi Anambra but the entire SouthEast as it will create a new world of economic opportunities and possibilities for the region and position the state to better explore it’s domiciled commerce as well as her oil and Gas potentials for the betterment of the people.

The Chairman, Sinoking Enterprises Investments Limited, Mrs Huang Zhihui who spoke through an interpreter, pointed out that they were greatly encouraged to undertake the venture by the culture of excellence, industry and enterprise for which Ndi Anambra were known and their long-standing business relationship with China. She expressed optimism that the project would help strengthen business ties between China and Nigeria.

Also the Chairman of Orient Petroleum Resources Ltd, and former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku emphasized that due technical aviation designs and reviews were conducted before the site was selected, noting that Gov Obiano’s vision was indicative of a promising future for Anambra State.

The President, Southeast Amalgamated Traders Association, and Chairman of the State Traders Association, Chief Okwudili Ezenwankwo acknowledged that what the governor has done for them through the project was unquantifiable, noting that as a result, they have resolved to stand solidly behind him.
