Since the assumption of acting Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun, the Nigeria Police Force has taken decisive action, resulting in the arrest of 297 individuals for illegal firearm possession and the recovery of over 520 firearms of various calibers, along with 4,043 rounds of ammunition and the retrieval of 264 stolen vehicles.
Egbetokun emphasized the police’s collaborative efforts with entities like the Nigeria Customs Service and other security agencies to secure borders against insurgents, particularly given the political unrest in Niger Republic following a military coup.
Addressing the Police Management Team, including Deputy Inspectors General of Police, Assistant Inspectors General of Police, and Commissioners of Police, Egbetokun stated on Tuesday that the police have also detained 986 armed robbery suspects, 377 kidnap suspects, 848 individuals implicated in homicide, 517 rape and defilement suspects, 874 suspected cult members, and an additional 5,281 suspects linked to various offenses. Notably, 363 kidnapping victims have been successfully rescued and reunited with their families.
Acknowledging ongoing threats across the nation, Egbetokun highlighted active anti-banditry operations taking place in the North-East and North-Central regions.
Regarding firearms licensing, the IG disclosed a temporary ban, citing the imperative to curtail the proliferation of illegally possessed arms. While the ban is currently in place, Egbetokun mentioned the possibility of reviewing this decision later.
In response to recent attacks and facility invasions in Adamawa State, Egbetokun ordered enhanced security measures around warehouses nationwide. The IG applauded the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress for their members’ conduct during recent nationwide protests concerning the fuel subsidy removal.
Egbetokun also revealed plans to mobilize at least 40,000 Police Mobile Force personnel for the Specialised Quick Intervention Squad, an initiative introduced to tackle mounting security challenges across the country. This proactive approach reflects the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force under Egbetokun’s leadership to safeguarding the nation and its citizens.
