Following the Super Falcons’ exit from the ongoing 2023 FIFA World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Nigerian defender Ashleigh Plumptre has expressed her pride in being a part of the team.

Plumptre’s comments come in the aftermath of Nigeria’s elimination from the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Super Falcons were knocked out after a penalty shootout against England, resulting in a 4-2 loss, following a 0-0 draw during the Round of 16 match.

Taking to her Twitter account on Wednesday night, Plumptre shared her sentiments, stating, “Incredibly grateful for the opportunity to go deeper into my own identity, learn more about what it means to have ‘Naija spirit,’ and to showcase to the world what a unified, determined and empowered group of women are capable of achieving. Proud to be a Super Falcon.”

Plumptre, aged 25, was a key player in Nigeria’s journey throughout the tournament, featuring in matches against Australia, the Republic of Ireland, Canada, and England. Having recently parted ways with Leicester City at the end of the previous season, she is currently a free agent.

Despite the team’s exit from the World Cup, Plumptre’s positive perspective on the experience highlights the unity and determination exhibited by the Super Falcons throughout their campaign.
