Samsung Electronics Co. announced on Tuesday that it has garnered over 1 million preorders for its latest foldable smartphones in South Korea, setting a new record for this innovative form factor. The preorders totaled 1.02 million units for the recently launched Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5, surpassing the previous record of 970,000 units for the earlier models.

Among the two new devices, the clamshell-style Galaxy Z Flip 5 saw greater popularity compared to the Fold 5, with approximately 70 percent of the total preorders being attributed to it. This preference for the Z Flip 5 was consistent with the previous model, the Galaxy Z Flip 4, which accounted for around 60 percent of preorders.

Samsung unveiled its fifth-generation foldable smartphones on July 26, introducing notable changes that aim to enhance user experience. One of the most significant modifications is the implementation of a new waterdrop-shaped hinge that enables the phones to close completely, eliminating the small gap near the hinge that was present in previous versions. This alteration not only provides a sleeker appearance but also addresses user complaints about the bulkiness of the folded phones.

While the Galaxy Z Fold 5 maintains similar specifications to its predecessor launched the previous year, it has been made slimmer and lighter, addressing concerns about its unwieldy size. On the other hand, the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip 5 boasts a distinct design change – its outer display is now twice as large as its predecessor’s, allowing users to accomplish more tasks without needing to unfold the device.

Roh Tae-moon, the President and Head of Samsung Electronics mobile business expressed the company’s strategic direction during a press briefing held two days after the Galaxy Unpacked event. He revealed Samsung’s goal of elevating the share of foldable phones to over 20 percent of Galaxy flagship sales worldwide.

This remarkable achievement of receiving over 1 million preorders reflects the growing interest and acceptance of foldable smartphones in the market. Samsung, as a pioneer in this segment, continues to drive innovation and respond to consumer demands for more versatile and convenient mobile devices. The success of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 preorders in South Korea not only underscores Samsung’s strong presence but also sets a promising trajectory for the future of foldable smartphones in the global tech landscape.
