Around two weeks following the military’s assumption of power in Niger, those behind the coup designated Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, a former economy minister, to assume the role of the nation’s new prime minister.

Late on Monday evening, a spokesperson for the military junta conveyed this announcement through a television broadcast.

Lamine Zeine has a background as a former minister of economy and finance, having served for several years in the cabinet of Mamadou Tandja, the president who was deposed in 2010. More recently, he contributed as an economist at the African Development Bank in Chad, as reported by a Nigerien media source.

At the close of July, the military orchestrated the removal of democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum, leading to the suspension of the country’s constitution. Niger, inhabited by around 26 million people, had been a vital ally in the West’s campaign against the advancement of Islamist militants across the Sahel.

Over the weekend, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) issued an ultimatum for the coup plotters to reinstate Bazoum; however, this deadline has since passed. The ultimatum included the possibility of ECOWAS resorting to measures, potentially involving the use of force.

The prime ministers of ECOWAS member states will convene in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, on Thursday to deliberate on the course of action moving forward.
