During the ministerial screening process in Nigeria, allegations made by the State Security Service (SSS) against Nasir El-Rufai have been revealed. These allegations pertain to his tenure as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from 2003 to 2007. Here are the key details of the allegations:

  1. Unguarded Public Utterances: The SSS report highlighted El-Rufai’s history of controversial and divisive public statements, including remarks related to religious and ethnic issues. One such statement was made after his party’s victory in the Kaduna State governorship election, where he suggested that Muslims could rule Kaduna for an extended period while maintaining fairness to Christians. This statement sparked criticism for potentially inflaming religious tensions.
  2. Human Rights Abuses: The SSS raised concerns about El-Rufai’s alleged human rights abuses while he was the governor of Kaduna State. This includes his role in the 2015 military crackdown on the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), resulting in the deaths of over 300 followers of the Shiite leader, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky. The SSS also accused El-Rufai of arbitrary arrests, property seizures, and suppression of protests, leading to extrajudicial killings.
  3. Alleged Financial Misconduct: The SSS claimed that El-Rufai was involved in ongoing litigation for selling federal government assets, and alleged embezzlement of public funds and abuse of trust during his various political roles.
  4. Petitions: The SSS indicated that El-Rufai’s nomination generated a significant number of petitions and rejections from the public. These petitions reportedly cover a range of issues, including human rights abuses, public trust abuse, and alleged corruption.
  5. Sundry Issues: The SSS accused El-Rufai of making uncomplimentary statements about Northern elders, as well as the alleged betrayal of his former bosses, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former President Muhammadu Buhari. The agency also raised concerns about his perceived inconsistent character and decisions.

The SSS did not provide evidence to substantiate these allegations in their letter to the Senate, claiming that investigations were ongoing. The allegations have sparked debates about El-Rufai’s suitability for a ministerial position, especially given his perceived close relationship with President Bola Tinubu and his history of controversial statements and actions. It is important to note that these are allegations, and any conclusions would require thorough investigation and due process.
