The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has revealed its intention to file a lawsuit against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, due to allegations of disbursing ‘holiday allowances’ to senators during their current recess. This announcement comes just four weeks after SERAP threatened to sue Akpabio and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, over plans to spend N40 billion on luxury cars for members and N70 billion as palliatives for new members.

The advocacy group made this disclosure through a tweet on its official Twitter account on August 10, 2023. This move highlights SERAP’s consistent effort to address the misappropriation of public funds and breaches of fundamental human rights.

Although specific details of the lawsuit are not fully clear, SERAP’s action continues to focus attention on the significant salaries and allowances enjoyed by federal lawmakers amidst economic hardships faced by many Nigerians.

Background: The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, faced criticism when he inadvertently revealed that holiday allowances had been sent to senators’ bank accounts as they prepared for their annual recess. Akpabio made this statement during a Senate session, unaware that it was being broadcast live. He later retracted his statement, stating that he had sent “prayers” to senators’ mailboxes instead of money.

This incident ignited controversy across the country, raising concerns about the appropriateness and timing of such financial disbursements. Critics argued that providing allowances while a significant portion of the population was grappling with economic difficulties displayed insensitivity on the part of lawmakers.
