Dire Situation: Over 700,000 Nigerian Children at Risk of Starvation, Reports Save the Children

The Save the Children organization has revealed a distressing scenario, as more than 700,000 children teeter on the brink of death due to escalating hunger. This dire circumstance stems from a surge in violent assaults by armed groups on farmers, exacerbating the already precarious food crisis in Nigeria.

In the first half of 2023, militia factions have mercilessly killed 128 farmers and abducted 37 others nationwide, leading to disruptions and the uprooting of livelihoods. Specifically, within June, non-state armed groups claimed the lives of 19 farmers in Borno alone, as documented by the Nigerian Security Tracker.

Save the Children’s statement underscores that these factors have significantly impeded critical food supplies and have the potential to plunge Nigeria into a grave food crisis this year.

Bulama, an experienced farmer with three and a half decades of involvement in North-East Nigeria, lamented, “Time and again, while we toil in the fields, armed groups assail and abduct fellow farmers – our comrades and kin – demanding ransoms that no villager can afford. They have not only slain and pillaged our crop yield but also left us destitute, with nothing to bring home. The hunger and starvation that afflict our community are the direct result of insurgents denying us access to our farmlands. And even when we risk our lives to cultivate, they plunder everything, consigning us to starvation.”

According to estimates by the United Nations in January, over 25 million Nigerians could confront food insecurity in 2023 alone. This marks a staggering 47 percent surge from the 17 million individuals who were previously vulnerable to famine due to insecurity and conflict.

In the North-Eastern states of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe, the situation is particularly dire, with more than two million children under the age of five facing acute malnutrition risks. Tragically, 700,000 of these children hover on the precipice of death in 2023 alone.
