Comrade Timi Frank, the former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called upon the United States to encourage Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release his academic records from Chicago State University to a Nigerian court.
Frank emphasized that this action would serve to alleviate tensions and dispel doubts. Additionally, he suggested that it would align with the principles of reciprocity and freedom of information prevalent in the United States of America.
In a statement shared with DAILY POST on Wednesday, Frank urged President Tinubu to cooperate by allowing Chicago State University to release his academic records, provided he has no undisclosed motives. He asserted that as a public servant, Tinubu should not hinder the release of his academic records, including his certificate, through a court process. Frank stated that citizens have the right to be fully informed about their leaders.
It is noteworthy that Tinubu had previously sought legal measures to prevent a United States Federal Court from disclosing his university academic records to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who had requested them.
Frank expressed his concern about perceived double standards, alleging that the US treats the matter of releasing Tinubu’s academic records with less seriousness due to its connection to Nigeria, an African nation. He highlighted the irony of this approach, given that such matters are treated gravely within the United States.
Frank commented, “It is rather shocking that the President has countered the request by filing a counter motion to restrain the Court from releasing his academic records to the petitioner. What seems to be more worrisome is the idea that a sitting President who had sworn to uphold the integrity and sanctity of the Presidential office would attempt to muzzle an independent judiciary of the United States through acts of coercion or frivolous motions unknown to the Justice Department.”
Drawing a parallel to the effective justice system of the United States, Frank reminded me of the trial of former President Donald Trump over alleged misconduct during his tenure. He argued that Tinubu should not have sought intervention from a US Court to block the release of his academic records and urged him to willingly provide the information, stating, “This is simply the right thing to do because when a subpoena has been issued, it’s meant to be honored anywhere.”
Frank concluded that, in aspiring to lead Nigeria, Tinubu should be prepared to subject himself to scrutiny by Nigerians, noting that Atiku’s actions are within legal bounds and not exceptional.
