Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has proposed the establishment of a trans-regional security task force aimed at mitigating the increasing cross-border criminal activities.
He voiced this proposition during a courtesy visit from Major General Valentine Okoro, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army’s 2nd Division, which took place in Osogbo on Tuesday.
Adeleke emphasized the significance of the visit, viewing it as an opportunity to enhance the security strategy for maintaining the existing peace and stability not only in Osun but also throughout the region.
“I advocate for the formation of a regional task force to monitor and curb cross-border criminal activities in the southwest and other regions under his Command,” Adeleke stated.
He further affirmed, “With a cooperative working relationship between the state government and the military, I assure the military team that Osun epitomizes hospitality, where no one is subjected to discrimination based on tribe, ethnicity, or religion.”
The governor commended Brigadier General Sulaimon, the Commander of Engineering Construction Regiment at Ede Army Barracks, for effectively securing the state. He noted that the presence of the military barracks in Ede serves as a potent deterrent to potential criminals seeking a location for unlawful activities.
Adeleke also highlighted that Osun State is fortunate to have the Engineering Construction Command in Ede, which comprises a variety of Army engineers, specialists, and combatants, all contributing to the state’s security framework.
General Okoro expressed his appreciation to the governor for fostering a safe and secure environment, conducive to residents’ lawful activities. He stated that his visit to Osun was part of his initiative to familiarize himself with the operational procedures in the states under his command.
Characterizing the state as fortunate, General Okoro acknowledged the presence of the Engineering Construction Command in Ede, which significantly contributes to the state’s security architecture.
He also encouraged increased collaboration between the security agencies and the public, aiming not only to maintain the current stability but also to enhance it by voluntarily sharing relevant and credible information with the Nigerian Army. He emphasized that the Nigerian Army operates with a people-centric approach.
In conclusion, Governor Ademola Adeleke’s proposal for a cross-border security task force and the discussion with General Okoro underlined the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling regional security challenges.
