There were over 400,000 applications received for the Medicine programs in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, but only 78,000 spaces were available as stated by the registrar.
Data
Out of the total 1,867,743 individuals who appeared for the 2022 UTME examinations, solely 1,615,656 managed to attain a minimum score of 140. As per the JAMB Registrar, merely 1,700,841 achieved a score of 100 or higher.
There are just 1,116,021 candidates who have both scored 140 and above, as well as meet the O-level prerequisites necessary to gain admission into universities in Nigeria.
Elaborations
It is incorrect to assert that not every examinee of the computer-based Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is entitled to admission, according to Mr. Oloyede’s clarification.
Certain candidates who were considered eligible because they scored above the minimum points were just trial candidates, lacking the required O’level results and never having taken the exam.
The individuals being assessed are potential candidates for the trial. Despite achieving a perfect score of 400 out of 400, their suitability for university admission is lacking, he stated.
According to him, there are also other scenarios where the potential candidates appear to be unqualified because they were not accepted, and this is primarily because of rigidity exhibited by these candidates who focus solely on one course, which typically has a higher level of competition than other courses.
Mr. Oloyede revealed that Nigerian universities had only 78,000 slots available for Medicine and Surgery, but more than 400,000 candidates had applied.
