President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria affirmed that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is resolute in its determination to reinstate democracy in Niger Republic. Speaking at the conclusion of the second ECOWAS extraordinary summit held in Abuja on Thursday, Tinubu emphasized the pressing concern of the political deadlock in the landlocked nation, sparked by the military junta’s defiance of the ECOWAS deadline to restore President Mohamed Bazoum to power.
Following thorough discussions, the assembly reached a consensus to deploy standby military forces to restore the constitutional order in Niger. Tinubu, serving as the ECOWAS chairperson, highlighted the organization’s collective dedication, loyalty, and acknowledgment of the imminent peril facing Niger. He regarded the summit’s outcomes as evidence of the potency of unity and cooperation, renewing the commitment to Niger’s populace and the broader ECOWAS community.
Tinubu stressed that all possibilities, including employing force as a last resort, remain on the table as per the communiqué from the extraordinary summit. He underscored the imperative nature of action, emphasizing that if the ECOWAS member states do not intervene, no external entity is likely to do so. He reaffirmed the steadfastness in supporting Niger’s journey toward achieving tranquil democratic stability.
Anticipating challenges, Tinubu acknowledged that the forthcoming endeavor would not be without hurdles. However, he expressed optimism that the cohesive strength of the bloc would facilitate the navigation of these impediments, ultimately steering the course toward enduring peace and prosperity for both Nigerians and the ECOWAS collective.
