Asari Dokubo, the leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Salvation Force (NDPSF), has boldly proclaimed his willingness to lead his private army in an intervention to restore democracy in Niger Republic, pending official authorization. Following the coup on July 26 that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum from power, orchestrated by Abdourahamane Tchiani, commander of the Nigerien presidential guard, the coup plotters have resisted complying with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) deadline to reinstate Bazoum. ECOWAS has also contemplated military intervention to address the crisis.

In a widely circulated video, Dokubo asserted his capacity to mount an offensive into the Niger Republic alongside his armed contingent if Nigeria’s federal government grants permission. He confidently stated, “If the government commissions me and my people to go to Niger Republic, we will go. We will defeat them and we will come back victorious. It is not a boast.” Dokubo further emphasized that his assertion was rooted in conviction rather than mere bravado. He expressed a readiness to confront any opposition, regardless of their origin.

Dokubo’s declaration comes in the wake of an ECOWAS meeting held in Abuja aimed at restoring democratic governance to the Niger Republic through diplomatic discussions. The situation in Niger remains tense as international stakeholders grapple with identifying effective means to address the crisis and ensure the return of democratic order.
