The current Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Taoreed Lagbaja, has issued a statement expressing optimism that the ongoing security challenges afflicting the South East region of Nigeria will soon come to an end. He emphasized that both the Army and various security agencies are tirelessly working to effectively address the security issues plaguing the area.

In a recent meeting with the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc committee investigating the disturbing incidents of killings and kidnappings in Umunochi Community, Abia State, General Lagbaja’s sentiments were conveyed by Brigadier General Gabriel Olufemi Esho, the Deputy Director of Operations at the Army Headquarters. The engagement took place on a Thursday and was widely reported by The PUNCH.

During this meeting, General Lagbaja highlighted the considerable threat of kidnapping that remains prevalent in the region, particularly within specific local government areas. He specifically pointed out that, during the month of July of the current year, the South East witnessed a surge in cases of kidnapping and attacks, which were allegedly perpetrated by criminals suspected to be affiliated with the proscribed people of Biafra.

General Lagbaja acknowledged the collaborative efforts between the Nigerian police, other security agencies, and the Army itself in tackling the pervasive insecurity. However, he candidly noted that the primary responsibility for resolving these challenges primarily lies with the Nigerian Army.

In light of the pressing concerns, the House of Representatives had formally requested the Nigerian Army, in a letter dated August 3rd, 2023, to provide a memorandum to the Ad-Hoc committee. This memorandum was intended to facilitate engagement and cooperation with relevant security agencies and stakeholders. The aim was to address the escalating incidents of kidnappings, assassinations, banditry, and other criminal activities occurring in and around two specific local government areas within the region.

Moreover, General Lagbaja made it a point to emphasize that the surge in kidnapping incidents in the South East, particularly during the second quarter of the current year, is an issue of significant concern. In response to this, he reassured the committee that every feasible effort will be exerted to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice, with the ultimate objective of restoring tranquility to the region.

Citing recent advancements, General Lagbaja highlighted the combined efforts of the Nigerian Army’s Division, operating in collaboration with other security agencies. He asserted that these efforts have led to a notable reduction in the kidnapping threat. Despite the challenges faced, this statement underscores the progress achieved in countering the menace.

In conclusion, Lieutenant-General Taoreed Lagbaja, through the representation of Brigadier General Gabriel Olufemi Esho, conveyed a strong message of resolve and commitment to addressing the security concerns plaguing the South East region. While acknowledging the persistent threat of kidnapping and criminal activities, he expressed confidence that the collective efforts of the Army, security agencies, and stakeholders will contribute to curbing these issues and restoring peace and security to the affected communities.
