The Niger junta has announced its intention to prosecute deposed President Mohamed Bazoum for high treason due to his communications with foreign leaders and international organizations.

As reported by Reuters, Colonel Amadou Abdramane, the junta’s spokesperson, delivered a statement on state television late on Sunday, revealing that the military authorities had amassed sufficient evidence to charge the ousted president with high treason and the undermining of Niger’s internal and external security.

In response to the coup in Niger, West African leaders heightened their criticism on August 10, calling for the deployment of a regional standby force to reinstate democracy in the country affected by the coup.

Niger Republic has been embroiled in political turmoil since the previous month when Bazoum was ousted from power through a coup orchestrated by the presidential guard.

Shortly thereafter, ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) responded by implementing sanctions and issuing an ultimatum to the ruling military junta: either step down within a week or face the possibility of military intervention.

The deadline of August 6 passed without any alteration in the political landscape. ECOWAS leaders emphasized their preference for resolving the crisis diplomatically, reserving the deployment of troops as a final resort.

Notably, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, the leader of the Niger Junta, has indicated a willingness to engage in diplomatic discussions. This sentiment was expressed during a meeting with Nigeria’s intervention team, which included Islamic scholars led by Bala Lau, the national chairman of Jamatul Izalatu Bida Waikamatu Sunnah.

Reportedly, Tchiani, as conveyed by Niger Republic’s Prime Minister Ali Zeine, is prepared for dialogue and hopes for talks with ECOWAS in the upcoming days.
