United States President, Donald Trump, has sharply criticised Western allies after several countries declined his request for military assistance to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

The US leader described the refusal by members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to support Washington’s operation as a “foolish mistake,” while also insisting that the United States could proceed without their backing.

“We do not need the help of anyone,” Trump declared, expressing frustration that allies were unwilling to deploy naval forces to safeguard the vital maritime corridor through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes.

Growing International Isolation

The diplomatic row comes as concerns intensify over the duration and consequences of the escalating war involving the United States, Israel and Iran. The conflict, now entering its third week, has destabilised the Middle East and triggered significant disruptions in global oil markets.

Trump’s position appeared further weakened following the resignation of his counterterrorism chief, Joe Kent, who stepped down from his role as director of the United States National Counterterrorism Center in protest.

In a statement posted on social media, Kent said he could not “in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran,” arguing that Tehran posed no imminent threat to the United States and alleging the conflict was initiated under pressure from Israeli interests.

Meanwhile, several NATO allies—including the United Kingdom, Germany and France—declined Washington’s request to deploy warships to the Hormuz shipping route.

Strait of Hormuz Crisis

The waterway has remained largely closed since forces of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced they had taken “complete control” of the strategic channel at the start of hostilities.

Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump criticised NATO’s response.

“The United States has been informed by most of our NATO ‘Allies’ that they don’t want to get involved with our Military Operation against the terrorist regime of Iran,” he wrote.

He also described the military alliance as a one-sided arrangement, arguing that the US spends vast sums protecting European nations without receiving comparable support when needed.

Calls for De-escalation

Amid the mounting crisis, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, urged Washington and Tel Aviv to pursue diplomatic solutions to avoid further escalation.

According to Kallas, European leaders are consulting with regional actors—including Jordan, Egypt and Gulf states—to develop proposals that could allow all parties to exit the conflict while preserving political dignity.

“The problem with wars is that it’s easier to start them than to stop them,” she said, stressing that “it would be in the interest of everybody if this war stops.”

Rising Casualties and Regional Fallout

The conflict has already inflicted severe humanitarian and economic damage across the region.

In Lebanon, Israel’s military campaign has displaced more than one million people, while the country’s health ministry reports at least 886 fatalities.

Inside Iran, an estimated 3.2 million people have been displaced, with over 1,300 reported killed since the fighting began.

Tensions escalated further after Israel claimed to have assassinated Iran’s top security figure, Ali Larijani, a development that could complicate diplomatic efforts to end the war.

At the same time, Gulf nations including Qatar and the United Arab Emirates—which host major US military installations—have faced fresh Iranian missile attacks targeting oil and gas infrastructure, though most of the strikes were reportedly intercepted.

With global oil markets rattled and the Middle East on edge, analysts warn that without urgent diplomatic intervention, the conflict could spiral into a broader regional war.
