Nigeria’s political landscape is heating up again as Senate President Godswill Akpabio dropped a major revelation that could redraw the map of the South-South and South-East regions—declaring that Anioma State “will be created” with Asaba as its capital.

The statement, made during a high-profile APC South-South zonal congress in Asaba, has sent shockwaves through political circles, reigniting long-standing agitation for the creation of Anioma State and raising fresh expectations among supporters. According to Akpabio, the push for the new state now enjoys strong legislative backing and aligns with the broader agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. (DAILY TIMES Nigeria)

In a bold and confident tone, the Senate President made it clear that the National Assembly is firmly behind the proposal, which is being championed by Senator Ned Nwoko. The initiative, he noted, has gained unprecedented traction, with dozens of lawmakers already throwing their weight behind it. (The Sun)

But beyond the political drama lies a deeper structural shift. Under the proposed arrangement, Asaba—currently the capital of Delta State—would become the capital of the new Anioma State, while Warri would take over as the new capital of a restructured Delta State. (DAILY TIMES Nigeria)

Akpabio argued that this restructuring is not just political, but strategic. He pointed to Warri’s existing infrastructure—its airport, seaport, oil industry presence, and administrative capacity—as clear evidence that it is ready to function as a state capital. (DAILY TIMES Nigeria)

For decades, the call for Anioma State has lingered in Nigeria’s political discourse, driven by demands for equity, regional balance, and administrative efficiency. Akpabio described the agitation as “historically justified,” framing it as a necessary step toward decentralisation and inclusive development. (Nigerian News Hub)

The momentum appears stronger than ever. Reports indicate that the proposal has already secured significant legislative endorsements, including support from constitutional amendment processes—placing it among the top priorities of the current National Assembly. (DAILY TIMES Nigeria)

However, despite the strong political signals, the creation of a new state in Nigeria remains a complex constitutional process. It requires approval from the National Assembly, endorsement by state Houses of Assembly, and ultimately, presidential assent—meaning the road ahead is still long and politically sensitive.

Even so, Akpabio’s declaration has changed the conversation. What was once seen as a distant political aspiration is now being projected as an imminent reality, setting the stage for intense debate, negotiation, and power realignment in the months ahead.

If it eventually materialises, Anioma State would not just be another addition to Nigeria’s map—it would mark a historic shift in regional politics, identity, and governance.
