Abuja, Nigeria – A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, to 72 years imprisonment over a major money laundering case involving public funds.

The judgment was delivered by Justice James Omotosho, who ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) successfully proved the charges against the former government official beyond reasonable doubt.

Nwabuoku was convicted on a nine-count charge bordering on money laundering, with the court handing down multiple prison terms that total 72 years. However, the sentences are to run concurrently, meaning he will serve a shorter effective jail term.

The case centred on the illegal diversion of about N868.4 million, which prosecutors said were proceeds of unlawful activities during his time as Director of Finance and Accounts at the Ministry of Defence between 2019 and 2021.

During the trial, the court described the diversion of funds meant for national security as serious and unacceptable, highlighting the impact of corruption on the country’s development.

Evidence presented in court showed that the funds were laundered through multiple channels, while the defendant reportedly returned over N200 million during the investigation.

Nwabuoku had earlier served as acting Accountant-General in 2022 under former President Muhammadu Buhari following the suspension of Ahmed Idris over separate allegations.

The conviction is being viewed as a major step in Nigeria’s anti-corruption fight, reinforcing calls for accountability in the management of public funds.
