The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has expressed deep concern about the living conditions of detained Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum and his family, according to a spokesperson for the UN chief.
In response, the United Nations has issued a statement once again demanding the immediate and unconditional release of President Bazoum. The statement emphasizes the distressing living conditions that President Bazoum and his family are reportedly enduring while being arbitrarily detained by members of the Presidential Guard in Niger.
The spokesperson further stated that Guterres called upon the leaders of the coup in Niger to adhere to the country’s international human rights obligations and release President Bazoum and his family without any conditions.
In the previous month, Niger’s presidential guard took President Bazoum out of power. Subsequently, the commander of the guard, Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, declared himself the new leader of the country.
